Nicosia Maps and Orientation

(Nicosia, Cyprus)

Cityscape pictureLocated just to the north of the very heart of Cyprus, Nicosia is the proud island capital. In terms of actual population, this is by far the biggest city on Cyprus, with more than 300,000 people currently calling Nicosia their home.

Now engulfing a number of the surrounding villages, Nicosia is a spreading city, and also serves the Nicosia District as an administrative capital. The city also enjoys the status of being Cyprus's financial hub, administrative centre and educational core, with several universities and colleges being situated here.

Maps and Orientation of the City

Nicosia is unusual in that it is actually the only divided capital left on the planet. The northerly region is actually the capital of the Turkish-appointed North Cyprus, while the southern half remains the capital of the region referred to as the Republic of Cyprus. These two areas are separated by a stretch known as the 'Green Line'.

For tourists, it is the Old City area of South Nicosia that holds the most interest and stands within the well-preserved 16th-century Venetian walls. On the southwesterly side, the public square named the Plateia Eleftherias is a good central point of reference. Maps of the Nicosia District and the island of Cyprus as a whole are available in the city, at the various outlets of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), with the main outlets sited on the Aristokyprou and the Leoforos Lemesou.
